What is the Merit System?

The Merit System is PredictionTalk's reputation system. Your rank reflects both your activity on the forum and the quality of your contributions as recognized by the community.

Two factors determine your rank:

  • Activityhow consistently you participate over time (not just post count)
  • Meritrecognition from trusted community members for quality posts
Merit can't be bought or self-awarded It comes from community-appointed Merit Sources — trusted members with a monthly budget to reward quality content.

How It Works

You write a quality post
    ↓
A Merit Source rewards your post (e.g. 5 merit)
    ↓
Your merit total grows → your rank may increase
    ↓
You earn sMerit (secondary merit) to pass on to others
    ↓
You can now reward other quality posts with your sMerit

Rules

  • You can't give merit or sMerit to your own posts
  • You can only merit the same post once
  • You must write a reason (at least 21 characters) explaining why
  • Ranks never decrease — you keep what you earn

Ranks

You need both enough Activity and Merit to reach each rank:

RankActivityMerit
Brand New00Brand New
Newbie10Newbie
Jr. Member301Jr. Member

How is Activity calculated?

Activity rewards consistent posting, not spam:

  1. Your time on the forum is divided into 2-week periods
  2. Each period where you posted at least once counts
  3. More active periods = higher Activity score
Spamming doesn't work Writing 500 posts in one day gives you the same Activity as writing 1 post that day. Post regularly over weeks to build Activity.

Merit Sources

Merit Sources are trusted community members who can give merit to quality posts. They have a monthly budget that resets on the 1st of each month.

How Sources give Merit

  1. Find a post that contributes real value to the community
  2. Click the Merit button below the post
  3. Choose the amount and write why it deserves merit

sMerit

When you receive merit from Sources, you automatically earn sMerit (secondary merit). For every 2 merit received, you get 1 sMerit to give away.

Example You receive 10 merit from Sources → you get 5 sMerit. You give 3 sMerit to other posts → your balance is 2 sMerit remaining.
  • sMerit you give counts toward the receiver's rank (like regular merit)
  • But receiving sMerit does NOT generate more sMerit — this prevents infinite loops
  • Anyone with sMerit balance can give it — you don't need to be a Source

Highlights

Highlights are a quick way to signal "this post is worth reading" to the community. They help Merit Sources discover quality posts that deserve merit.

  • Available once you reach Jr. Member
  • Click the fire icon below any post to highlight it
  • Click again to remove your highlight
  • Posts with many highlights appear on the Merit Dashboard

Badges

Badges recognize specific expertise and contributions. They are awarded by admins.

Rank-Based Restrictions

Your rank doesn't just show your reputation — it unlocks forum privileges. New accounts start with limited access that expands as you build trust. This protects the community from spam and abuse while rewarding genuine participants.

Post Approval

Rank New Discussions Replies
Brand New Need moderator approval Need moderator approval
Newbie Need moderator approval ✓ Auto-approved
Jr. Member+ ✓ Auto-approved ✓ Auto-approved
First post = entry gate Your very first post always needs moderator approval. After that, your rank updates and future replies auto-approve. This one-time check stops drive-by spam.

Post Cooldown

There is a mandatory waiting period between posts. Higher ranks have shorter cooldowns:

Rank Cooldown
Brand New6 min
Newbie2 min
Jr. Member60 sec
Member30 sec
Full Member15 sec
Sr. Member10 sec
Hero Member8 sec
Legendary5 sec
Admins and moderators are exempt Cooldowns apply only to regular users. Forum staff can always post without delay.

Image Embedding

To prevent image-based spam, embedding images is rank-gated:

Rank Images in posts
Brand New / Newbie ✗ Not allowed — [img] and ![markdown] tags are blocked
Jr. Member+ ✓ Full image embedding
Links are always allowed You can always post image URLs as plain links — they just won't render as embedded images until you reach Jr. Member.

Other Rank-Gated Features

Feature Minimum Rank
Highlight posts (fire icon) Jr. Member
Give sMerit to posts Any rank (need sMerit balance)
Give Merit to posts Merit Source only (admin-appointed)

These restrictions are not punishment They exist to build trust. Every respected community member started with these same restrictions and earned their way up. Your rank is proof that you belong here.

Likes vs Upvotes/Downvotes

PredictionTalk has three separate feedback systems on posts. Each serves a different purpose:

Quick Comparison

👍 Like ⬆⬇ Upvote / Downvote ⭐ Merit
What it is Simple «I liked this» Reddit-style voting Reputation reward
Action Like / Unlike (toggle) Upvote, Downvote, or neutral Give merit + write reason
Affects discussion sorting ✓ Hotness & Votes sort
Affects user rank ✓ Points & Rankings ✓ Merit rank progression
Leaderboard ✓ /rankings page ✓ Merit Dashboard
Can be negative ✓ Downvotes subtract points ✗ Merit is always positive
Requires reason ✓ Min 21 characters
Who can use it Any Member Any Member Merit Sources & sMerit holders

Likes — Social Engagement

A like is a lightweight way to say «I appreciate this post.» It has no algorithmic impact — it does not change how discussions are sorted, ranked, or displayed. Think of it as a social nod.

  • One click — Like or Unlike (binary toggle)
  • Shows «N people liked this» with avatars below the post
  • Sends a notification to the post author
  • Does NOT affect sorting, ranking, visibility, or points — purely cosmetic

Upvote / Downvote — Content Ranking

Votes are the main way to surface good content and push down low-quality content. They directly affect how discussions are sorted and contribute to user reputation points.

  • Three states: Upvote (+1), Downvote (-1), or neutral (0)
  • Each vote adds or subtracts from the post author's total points
  • Points determine user's position on the Rankings page (/rankings)
  • Enables «Hotness» sort — a Reddit-style algorithm that promotes discussions with recent upvotes
  • Enables «Votes» sort — rank discussions by total vote count
  • Sends a notification to the post author (upvote or downvote)
Hotness algorithm Hotness = log10(votes) + sign(votes) × (age / 45000). This means a post with 10 upvotes right now will rank higher than a post with 100 upvotes from last month. Fresh quality rises to the top.

Merit — Deep Recognition

Merit is the most meaningful form of recognition. Unlike likes and votes, merit requires a written reason and affects your permanent rank. See the sections above for full details.

Can I use all three on the same post?

Yes. All three systems are independent. You can like a post, upvote it, AND give it merit — each action is tracked separately and has different effects. They never interfere with each other.

When to use what? Like — quick «nice post» acknowledgment. Upvote — «this is useful, others should see it» (affects ranking). Merit — «this is genuinely high-quality content» (affects permanent reputation).

FAQ

Where can I see my rank and stats?

Go to your profile and click the Merit tab. You'll see your rank, activity, merit received, sMerit balance, badges, and transaction history.

Where is the Merit Dashboard?

Visit predictiontalk.org/merit — it shows recent transactions, top merit receivers, most highlighted posts, and active sources.

How do I become a Merit Source?

Sources are appointed by the admin based on their track record and standing in the community. There's no application process — just consistently contribute quality content.

Can my rank go down?

No. Once you earn a rank, you keep it permanently.

What's the difference between Merit and sMerit?

Merit comes from appointed Sources (limited supply). sMerit comes from anyone who has received merit (derived supply). Both count toward rank, but only merit from Sources generates new sMerit.

Why is the minimum reason 21 characters?

To encourage meaningful feedback. If you're recognizing someone's contribution, you should explain why — it helps the whole community understand what quality looks like.

What's the difference between Like and Upvote?

A Like is a simple social gesture — it shows appreciation but has zero impact on sorting or rankings. An Upvote actively promotes the discussion: it affects the Hotness sort, adds points to the author's reputation, and moves the discussion up in rankings. Use Like for a quick nod; use Upvote when you want others to see the content.

Why can't I post images?

Image embedding is unlocked at Jr. Member rank (activity ≥ 30, merit ≥ 1). This prevents image-based spam from new accounts. You can still share image URLs as plain text links.

Why is my post pending approval?

Brand New accounts need their posts approved by a moderator. This is a one-time check — after your first approved post, your rank updates to Newbie and future replies auto-approve. New discussions auto-approve from Jr. Member rank.

Why do I have to wait between posts?

Post cooldowns prevent spam and encourage thoughtful posts. New accounts wait 6 minutes between posts; this decreases as your rank grows. Legendary members have only a 5-second cooldown.
